Supreme Court quashes injunction to stop construction of National Cathedral
The Supreme Court has dismissed an application for injunction that sought to freeze the preparatory construction works on the National Cathedral at Ridge in Accra.
The plaintiff, Alfred Holme, had prayed the court to temporarily stop the construction work until the substantive case is determined.
In his main case before the court, the businessman wants the court to declare whether it is lawful for the state to build a cathedral on lands it had earlier acquired for different purposes.
Counsel for Mr Holme, Mr Bright Akwetey, had argued, before the court, that halting the preparatory work might save the state from financial loss, should the court rule in his client’s favour.
But before tossing out the application, the court presided over by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, said there were provisions in the country’s law to deal with the situation., the Daily Graphic reported.
Meanwhile, preparatory work on the cathedral is moving steadily with houses and some offices mowed down and parts of the area boarded ahead of the construction work, which starts next month.
The Cathedral is expected to cost the public purse at least $100 million with the government expected to commit between $10 million to $20 million.
