#Savethejudiciarydemo: Mahama’s comeback fueled by vengeance – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of returning to power with “vengeance in his heart,” amid growing controversy over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking on Monday, May 5, after leading a New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties demonstration and presenting a petition to Parliament, Afenyo-Markin warned of what he described as a dangerous politicisation of state institutions under the current administration.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that President Mahama has returned to power not with a reconciliatory spirit, but with vengeance in his heart, we are witnessing actions not aimed at building institutions, but tearing them down,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He described the suspension of the Chief Justice as part of a broader agenda to erode judicial independence and stifle dissent.

“We must not allow personal vendettas to dictate national policy, Ghana deserves leadership rooted in justice and reconciliation—not revenge,” he cautioned.

The NPP-organised protest attracted a large crowd, including party supporters and civil society representatives.

Protesters decried the Chief Justice’s suspension as unconstitutional and politically driven.

The petition submitted to Parliament calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspension and urges immediate steps to uphold the rule of law and constitutional governance.
