Safeguard Bank of Ghana’s independence — Mahama to Governors
President John Dramani Mahama has called on the newly appointed governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, and his first deputy governor to uphold and protect the central bank’s independence.
Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, February 25, shortly after swearing them into office, President Mahama emphasized that maintaining the Bank of Ghana’s autonomy is crucial for strengthening the nation’s economy.
He urged the new leadership to focus on rebuilding public trust and enhancing the institution’s credibility.
“The independence of the Bank of Ghana must be protected at all costs,” President Mahama stated, directing Dr. Asiama and his deputy to ensure the central bank operates without external influence.
He also stressed the need for responsible fiscal management and strict adherence to the legal and regulatory framework governing the bank’s operations.
Reaffirming his commitment to non-interference, President Mahama assured that his administration would respect the central bank’s mandate, allowing it to function free from political influence.
“As President, I am committed to ensuring that the central bank remains independent, operating solely within its defined mandate,” he affirmed.
He concluded by emphasizing that safeguarding the central bank’s independence is essential to achieving a resilient and stable economy that benefits all Ghanaians.
