#RobberyInTuba: “Ghana football is at a crossroads” – Accra Lions demand integrity and reform
Accra Lions have warned that Ghanaian football is at a critical juncture, urging stakeholders to restore integrity and professionalism to the game.
The club issued this call following their controversial 1-0 loss to Dreams FC in Tuba, where refereeing decisions overshadowed the game.
In a statement, the Lions declared, “Ghana football is at a crossroads. If we want to get back to our old strength, it requires a minimum of integrity, professionalism, transparency, and sportsmanship.” They argue that without significant reforms, the league’s reputation could be permanently damaged.
The match in question was rife with controversy. Accra Lions allege that Referee Hanson deliberately officiated in favor of Dreams FC, pointing to questionable calls, including a red card issued to one of their players.
Fans at the venue expressed disbelief at the officiating, which led to widespread booing.
The club also noted a lack of basic infrastructure and support during the game.
With only four security officials present and no GFA cameraman to record the match, questions about the league’s organization have resurfaced.
Accra Lions linked the local league’s struggles to Ghana’s underwhelming performances at the international level. The club said, “The results at the international level are a reflection of the development at the local level.”
They argue that poor refereeing standards, lack of sponsorship, and minimal professionalism hurt the sport’s growth.
As reigning runners-up in the Ghana Premier League, Accra Lions feel a responsibility to speak up.
The club emphasized its dedication to developing young talent, adding, “We see it as our duty to ask whether the Ghana Premier League, as we are experiencing it these days, is a healthy environment for highly talented young players.”
The Lions’ statement has reignited conversations about the need for reforms, with fans echoing their concerns using the hashtag #RobberyInTuba.
