The Ministry of Roads of Highways has begun a nationwide exercise to restore malfunctioning and damaged traffic lights in the country.

A statement from the ministry noted a concerning rise in vehicular crashes, theft, and vandalism targeting traffic control infrastructure.

To address the escalating issue, the ministry has announced a collaboration with the police for daily patrols at locations slated for the installation of new traffic lights.

The ministry further stated that the restoration costs are comparable to installing new systems, posing an additional financial burden on both the ministry and taxpayers.

In response to the destruction of traffic lights, the ministry has urged the public to report instances of vandalism.

It also plans to work closely with the police to ensure that individuals causing damage to public road infrastructure face legal consequences.

The ministry used the opportunity to remind the public that damaging public road infrastructure, including traffic lights, is an offense under Subsection 4 of Section 114 of the Road Traffic Regulation L.I. 2180.

Below is the statement to that effect.
