Resign now! Ansah Asare Tells Attorney-General Godfred Dame

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Ansah Asare, has called for the immediate resignation of the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

His demand comes on the back of allegations by Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance purchase trial, before the Accra High Court.

Mr Jakpa alleged that the Attorney-General had repeatedly sought his assistance to implicate Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson in the ongoing ambulance purchase trial.

This development, according to Mr Ansah Asare, is scandalous and does not send the right signal in the justice system.

“My candid opinion is that the learned Attorney-General knows or is deemed to know the law. Apart from the judges, I think the other person we can say the law rests in his bosom is the Attorney-General.

“The Attorney-General ought to know where, how and when he has to meet accused persons and in the residence of a sitting justice of the Supreme Court, this is scandalous and the Attorney General must resign or the president must fire him,” he said on Joynews.

Mr Ansah Asare is not the only person calling for the head of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, urged the A-G to resign or step aside from the ongoing court case to protect the integrity of the justice system.

“If indeed the learned Attorney-General has engaged in acts as alleged by the witness [Richard Jakpa], it would be appropriate for him to resign so he can be fully investigated,” he said.

The Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, also asked the Attorney-General to step down.

According to Mr Amaliba, it would be in Mr Dame’s best interest to resign before the NDC releases what it claims to be damning evidence against him.

Mr Amaliba further argued that Mr Dame is not suitable for his office due to his temperament and his tendency to perceive political opponents as enemies.

He believes that Mr Dame’s conduct undermines the impartiality required for his role.

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson for the Attorney-General’s Department, Isaac Wilberforce Mensah, explained that the Attorney-General met only with Richard Jakpa at the pre-negotiation stage because Jakpa did not have a legal representative.

Additionally, he said the meeting was held in the home of a Supreme Court justice, and that Mr. Dame did no wrong.

Both the A-G and the accused have since threatened to release further evidence to fortify their claims.
