Airport area residents angry over “illegal” construction of 22-storey building
Residents of Airport residential are up in arms against the construction of a 22-storey building in the area.
The edifice is being constructed close to the Association International School.
According to the residents, city authorities have been compromised by the private developer hence, their decision to look on while the construction continues.
They said the ongoing construction causes heavy vehicular traffic and noise pollution in the area.
The disgruntled residents have threatened legal action against city authorities and the developer.
The Airport residential area is under the newly carved Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly.
“This matter concerns me because there have been so many government agencies that have been informed about this illegal construction. They have no excavation permit. The EPA has been notified, the urban roads, local government, civil aviation, and so on but nobody has done anything about it ” a resident said in an interview on Starr FM.
She explained that despite an order from the assembly to have the developer fix damage it had caused with the excavator, that has not been done.
“They gave them eight weeks to repair the damage the excavation had caused. This has not been completed. We’re in December. We have seen that they have not done what the local authorities, Ayawaso West, told them to do and nobody has done anything about it. The assembly hasn’t even taken them to court for breaching their order” she said in the interview which the theghanareport.com monitored.
The resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said they can no longer trust the government agencies as well as the security personnel.
“We have no faith, no confidence in government agencies. They are not enforcing the regulation. They are not enforcing the laws and we feel that the people have been compromised”
The airport residential area is one of the plush settlements in Accra. It hosts the Kotoka International Airport, a section of the Ambassadorial enclave and many of the top class hotels in the country.
