Report on IGP leaked tape ready for presentation – Committee to Speaker
The Ad-hoc committee’s report on the leaked tape involving senior police officers plotting against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare is ready for presentation in Parliament.
This was made known by the Ranking Member of the Committee on Defence and Interior, James Agalga, on Friday, June 14, 2024.
Mr Agalga, who served as the vice chairman of the committee, emphasized the urgency of presenting the report to prevent further speculation.
He appealed to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin to ensure the report is listed for discussion by next Tuesday (June 18, 2024).
“Mr Speaker, that report is ready. Before we went on recess, it was listed for consideration. Given the public interest, I appeal to you to direct the business committee to list this report as a matter of urgency starting from next Tuesday,” Agalga stated.
He stressed that the delay in presenting the report has led to “unhealthy speculations” about the committee’s work and highlighted the need to address the matter promptly to bring closure.
The committee, chaired by Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea, was tasked to investigate the authenticity of a leaked tape plotting to remove the IGP from office.
Three police officers, COP George Alex Mensah (retired), Superintendent George Asare, Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, and Daniel Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were implicated in the alleged IGP tape.
While Mr Naabu confirmed the content of the tape, COP Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare denied the content, saying portions had been edited.
COP Mensah, for instance, claimed that the tape had been doctored and did not accurately reflect the content of the original conversation with former NPP Northern Regional Chairman Bugri Naabu.
