Remove unauthorised billboards by June 2 – NRSA to Assemblies
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has taken a strong stance against the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.
They have been warned that legal action will be pursued against those who do not remove unauthorised billboards from road medians by Monday, June 2, 2025.
This warning comes on the heels of a recent meeting at which many assemblies failed to participate in discussions about compliance.
Speaking to the media, NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba expressed his disappointment, noting what he considers a troubling lack of engagement from assembly members.
“We invited all of them through the Local Government Ministry. They misunderstood and assumed the invitation was extended to all assemblies nationwide, which is why some came from outside Accra,” he said.
“Those within Accra, who were required to attend, failed to show up. We are treating their absence as deliberate noncompliance, and we will proceed to sue the assemblies that have ignored our directive.”
Amaliba highlighted that the NRSA originally granted a 21-day period for the removal of these billboards and had hoped to extend that deadline during the meeting. Unfortunately, the lack of participation has left the agency no option but to take them to court.
“This means they are not interested in complying. So, what we are going to do is meet them in court,” he added.
The NRSA emphasises that these measures are crucial for public safety, which is being compromised by unauthorised structures on the roads.
