Education stakeholders such as the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Teachers & Educational Workers Union(TEWU), and Concerned Teachers Association of Ghana, are calling on the Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum, to remove the newly appointed Director General of Education, Dr Eric Nkansah for someone with an educational background to manage such a position.
They have given the Minister of Education seven working days to withdraw Dr. Eric Nkansah else the educational sector will lose 30,000 teachers who will embark on a sit-down strike.
In a press briefing, the President of the Concerned Teachers Asociation of Ghana, King Ali Awudu, indicated that “the newly appointed Director of Education has not undertaken any course related to education. They believe a leader can only manage a field he or she is acquainted with”.
According to the group, if the minister refuses to honour their wish, then from Friday, November 4, 2022, they will not attend any meeting that the Ministry of Education will organise.
They believe Dr Eric Nkansah has more knowledge in Banking and Finance and not education, and that is why they are appealing to the Minister of Education to replace him.
At the meeting, it was alleged that Mr Adutwum claims the newly elected Director of Education has taught at a primary school and a Senior High School (S.H.S.).
But the group refuted that allegation because they believed the newly appointed G.E.S. Director has no background knowledge in education.
The former Director General of Education, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, was dismissed from office by the President of the Republic of Ghana on Monday, October 17, 2022. After his dismissal, Dr Eric Nkansah was asked to replace him as the Director of the Ghana Education Service.
He was asked to accept his official appointment letter within fourteen(14) days.
