The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is urging the Police to reconsider its assessment of Bryan Acheampong’s comment.

According to the Ghana Police Service, statements made by former President John Dramani Mahama and Agric Minister, Bryan Acheampong had all failed the criminal threshold test.

However, the NDC insists that comments made by the Agric Minister have criminal tendencies, hence, they want the police to reconsider its position that the comments did not “pass the test of criminality.”

A press release issued on Friday, April 21, and signed by the party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, stated that “The National Democratic Congress hereby wishes to reiterate these concerns and to once again remind the Ghana Police Service to take a relook, particularly at their stance on Bryan Acheampong’s incendiary comments, consistent with their position on similar recent events.

“We expect the Police to act on this matter with the speed and urgency with which they acted in apprehending and prosecuting other political actors for making similar statements in recent times.”

Bryan Acheampong after a Walk dubbed “Walk to Build A Better Ghana” with a multitude of NPP supporters at Mpreaso-Kwahu in the Eastern Region on Saturday, April 8, 2023, stated that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will never hand over power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2025.

According to the Abetifi MP, the NPP will show the NDC that they have the “men” should they try to use threats and violence in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Following his comments, the NDC through its legal team petitioned the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to immediately arrest and prosecute him.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) also petitioned the CID demanding Mr. Mahama’s arrest for allegedly making treasonable remarks.

The NPP in its petition stated that prior to the 2020 general elections, the then NDC flagbearer said the NDC will face the NPP boot for boot if the NPP continues to intimidate NDC members with hoodlums and vigilante groups.

The NPP also demanded the arrest of the National Chairman of the opposition NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia for making comments that portend great danger to the peace and stability of the country.

The police administration subsequently engaged the leaders of the two major parties on how best to defuse political tensions as part of efforts to maintain peace as the country nears the 2024 general election.
