The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is gearing up for a significant demolition operation today, Thursday, 10 April 2025

This initiative aims to remove unauthorised structures situated on the Weija and Dansoman Ramsar sites.

This action is part of a broader government strategy aimed at restoring protected lands and mitigating the impact of recurring flooding in the capital.

The enforcement comes in the wake of a recent inspection led by President John Dramani Mahama, who toured Ramsar sites and identified flood-prone areas in Accra.

During his visit, President Mahama emphasised the urgency of addressing all encroachments on designated Ramsar lands and waterways as part of his commitment to environmental protection and public safety.

It will be recalled that John Mahama, speaking at the 2025 National Eid-ul-Fitr celebration at Black Star Square, expressed his alarm over the rising trend of illegal developments in vulnerable ecological zones.

He pointed out that such activities significantly contribute to urban flooding and inflict damage on properties, especially during rainfall.

The President warned that the government would not tolerate any further unauthorised construction on waterways and protected areas, reinforcing a commitment to upholding planning regulations.

He stressed the importance of preserving natural drainage paths to prevent the devastating impact of floods that have historically affected communities.

Leading the demolition operation will be the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, accompanied by a team of security personnel.

This initiative aims not only to dismantle unauthorised structures but also to reclaim and rehabilitate the affected Ramsar lands, thereby restoring natural watercourses and improving the city’s resilience to flooding.
