The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has officially announced that it will not participate in the nationwide strike against illegal mining organized by labour groups beginning October 10, 2024.
This decision follows an emergency meeting of the GRNMA National Council held on October 8, 2024.
In a press statement released on October 9, the association expressed its support for the vital cause of combating illegal mining (galamsey).
However, GRNMA emphasized its unwavering commitment to ensuring that healthcare services remain available to Ghanaians during this critical time.
The association believes that while the fight against galamsey is important, the health and well-being of the public must take precedence.
“The GRNMA and its members will not embark on the strike action declared by organised labour and therefore directs that all nurses and midwives stay at post and continue delivering safe and quality health services to the good people of Ghana,” the statement read.
The association added that, although it will not participate in the industrial action, it stands in solidarity with organized labour in opposing the environmental and social destruction caused by galamsey.
“The GRNMA solidarises with member trade unions and associations under organised labour in the fight against galamsey and will continue to advocate for stronger national interventions to curtail the galamsey menace in Ghana,” the statement highlighted.
Meanwhile, the Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) and the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) have also refused to participate in the upcoming strike.
Both associations emphasized solidarity with organized labour in the fight against illegal mining, recognizing the serious environmental and social destruction.
However, they pointed out their essential role in providing healthcare services to Ghanaians, underscoring the need for uninterrupted medical support during this critical period.
