Recent crashes due to parental irresponsibility, reckless driving – Road Safety
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has raised concerns about the recent surge in road traffic crashes in Ghana.
According to the NRSA, the main factors contributing to these crashes are parental irresponsibility and reckless driving, with excessive speeding also playing a significant role.
Some of the recent incidents include crashes at Obretema, near Suhum; Atwedie near Juaso; East Legon, and Kwapia near Obuasi, which occurred on September 21, 2024, October 11, 2024, October 12, 2024, and October 14, 2024
In a statement issued on October 17, the NRSA disclosed that these crashes have resulted in the death of 30 lives and numerous injuries within just one month.
The NRSA expressed frustration that despite increased public education and operational controls, the number of crashes continues to rise.
To address this, the Authority plans to commission a multi-stakeholder investigation into the Kwapia crash under Regulation 8 of the National Road Safety Authority Regulations 2022 (L.I.2468).
“Preliminary investigations by the Ghana Police Service and the NRSA revealed excessive speeding, parental irresponsibility, and reckless driving as the main contributing factors to the crashes.
“This notwithstanding, the NRSA intends to commission a multi-stakeholder investigation into the crash occurring in Kwapia near Obuasi, under Regulation 8 of the National Road Safety Authority Regulations 2022 (L.I.2468).”
The National Road Safety Authority issued a stern reminder to parents and guardians that the minimum legal age for driving in Ghana is 18 years.
