John Mahama denied ‘Rawlings’ book of condolence – NDC claims

The National Democratic Congress (NDC ) says its flagbearer, John Mahama, was on Friday denied an opportunity to sign a book of condolence opened for the late former President  Jerry John Rawlings.

The party claimed Mr. Mahama, and a delegation he led to eulogize their fallen founder, were told the book opened at the Accra Conference Center had been closed for the day, hours after it was opened in memory of Ghana’s longest-serving President.

“They [State Protocol] told us the book has been closed and it will be reopened on Monday, ”Ofosu Ampofo, NDC National Chairman told Accra-based Asempa FM.

He said they had gone to empathize with the Rawlings but before they left Dr. Zanetor Rawlings told them the State had opened a book of condolence.

“While we were there Dr. Zanetor Rawlings came to tell us that the State had opened a book of condolence at the Accra Conference Center to we drove there to sign it but the State Protocol told us they had closed for the day”.

According to him, the party was considering opening a book of condolence.

“I don’t think I will go back there on Monday to sign, and in any case, the party has plans of opening a book of condolence at our head office and at all our regional and constituency offices,” he said.

He said the party will hold a press conference on Monday.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings passed away on the morning of Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital following a short illness.

The patriarch of the Fourth Republic led Ghana from December 31, 1981, to January 7, 2001, when he handed over to J.A. Kufuor.

He was survived by his wife and four children.

Theghanareport.com‘s attempt to reach the State Protocol did not yield any fruit.

What was the reason the state protocol gave before denying the former president to sign? I personally believe there was a poor journalism here. The reporter interviewed Samuel ofosu ampofo without interviewing the state protocol officials. This makes some of believe that ex president was not treated fairly. Was there any reason for that we want to know. Their reason might be legitimate but because we have not heard from them yet it will be bias to pre judge any wrong doing. I have been following American journalism for sometime if this has happened in US the reported I think would have gone further to interviewed both sides so that public can draw their own conclusions. The reporter didn’t tell us any attempt to reach the other side if there was any and I think is a bad journalism. I was listening to a woman in Europe making video about it who went straight to condemn the state protocol and the government which I see it to as too hard. Even the caption started with an ” alleged” if it is an alleged I did not expect her too to go that far but I don’t blame her because anyone listening to her knows where she was coming from. If in deed the state protocol does not have any tangible reason to offer the qe can talk of politicization other than that please let put politics aside now and wait for a full details.

Its been a while since the allegation was made and State protocol could have shed light on it. What r they waiting for? Orders from above? This sort of behaviour is too petty. State protocol should be serving the nation not political parties
