Rawlings congratulates NDC flagbearer Mahama
Former president JJ Rawlings has congratulated John Mahama for winning the presidential primaries of the National Democratic Congress.
Mahama was the overwhelming favourite among seven candidates, winning 95 percent of 213,487 votes cast on Saturday, making him the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress.
Mahama was president from 2012 to 2016, when he lost a re-election bid to President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over a faltering economy and corruption allegations.
In a congratulatory message, Rawlings said scaling over the primaries is just “the first step.”
“While congratulating ourselves as a party for a relatively smooth process, we have to remember that this is only the first step of the task to convince the larger Ghanaian electorate,” the statement said.
The founder of the party called on the rank and file of the party to unite ahead of the 2020 general elections.
“My congratulations also go to all the other candidates for the dignified manner they conducted themselves throughout the process and for accepting the results in a mature and good-natured manner.
“While congratulating ourselves as a party for a relatively smooth process, we have to remember that this is only the first step of the task to convince the larger Ghanaian electorate.
“I urge the candidate, the party leadership and all the grassroots to work together to re-embrace the NDC’s core principles in a bid to carve a positive message and image for the party,” Rawlings said.
