Achimota School’s potential team for this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has stirred up a storm on social media after a photo surfaced on Friday, June 2.

One student who stood out in the image was Tyrone Marhguy, a Rastafarian teenager who found himself at the center of a heated admission controversy that rocked Ghana’s education sector two years ago.

It will be recalled that Tyrone was one of two boys who faced rejection when Achimota School cited their dreadlocks as a violation of the school’s code of conduct.

The Rastafarian students took the matter to court, challenging the school’s decision and alleging discrimination. In a landmark ruling on May 31, 2021, the High Court ordered Achimota School to admit the students.

While his colleague, Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, accepted a scholarship and enrolled at Ghana International School, Tyrone Marhguy decided to join Achimota School and wasted no time, appearing for his end-of-term examination hours after enrollment.

The latest development has reignited the debate and many are wondering if this is a clear case of the rejected stone.

The bible suggests that the stone the builder’s rejected would soon become the cornerstone.
