Railway workers threaten strike over unpaid salaries

Railway services across Ghana could come to a grinding halt as members of the Railway Workers Union threaten to strike over seven months of unpaid salaries.

The union has issued a stern warning to Ghana Railway Company Limited, giving management until Tuesday, May 13, 2025, to settle the arrears owed to more than 900 staff members.

According to union leaders, workers are struggling to meet their basic needs and have lost faith in management’s promises.

The financial strain, they say, has only worsened since the recent change in government, with no clear plan in place to stabilise operations at the state-owned company.

Union leaders argue that despite repeated appeals, they have received no official communication or commitment regarding payment timelines.

Franklin Cobbinah, the Branch Secretary of the Accra division, voiced the frustration felt across the network.

“For the past seven months, we have not been paid. Anytime you ask, nobody is willing to volunteer information to you. We have tried to calm the workers down. Now, we can’t control them anymore. So, as workers, we are demanding our seven months’ salary from our management,” he said.

The planned industrial action is expected to affect the busy Tema-Accra railway corridor, disrupting daily commutes for thousands of passengers.

With no clear resolution in sight, there are growing concerns over the wider impact on public transportation and livelihoods.

The union is urging the government and company leadership to act swiftly to prevent the shutdown of rail operations.
