Raiding Ofori-Atta’s house “worse than armed robbery” —Nitiwul

Former Minister Dominic Nitiwul has condemned the raiding of a house belonging to former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta by armed military men.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Mr. Nitiwul argued that raiding someone’s house with soldiers is constitutionally not right, as only police are permitted to do so by law.

The Bimbilla MP made this comment after Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, recalled how his private residence was raided by the police when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2017.

“You don’t use soldiers to raid someone’s house when the person is not in the country. Let me repeat to my colleague [Abdulai Jinapor] that in a democracy, you do not use soldiers to raid somebody’s home, especially when that person has told you I am not in the country and I will report when I get back.

“Ofori-Atta wrote to the OSP that ‘I am not in the country, and when I return, I will report to you for an investigation’. You have no right to raid a man’s house when he is not there and has told you that he is out of the country. This is worse than armed robbery.

“In fact to the extent that I have seen pictures of Richard Jakpa, who has just been forgiven of his sins, raiding someone else’s house.”.

He added, “What business does that man have to do with the man who has travelled outside? This is not the democracy we are calling for”.

Initially, it was alleged that the OSP ordered the raiding of Mr. Ofori-Atta’s house.

However, in a press briefing, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, headed by Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, refuted the claims.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta, OSP did not raid your house on Tuesday, 11 February 2025, or on any other day. Mr. Ofori-Atta, the OSP did not cause any persons in uniform to raid your house on Tuesday, 11 February 2025, or on any other day,” he emphasised.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta, that could not have been the OSP and that is not our style. If the OSP enters your premises, you will know whether it is the OSP or not that has come there, and your lawyers have all cause to make an inquiry if it’s the OSP or not. We have methods of investigating cases and how we identify ourselves, as this is the OSP.

“Our intelligence points us to state that the purported raid on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s residence was staged or, at best, an imposter action in an attempt to cause disfavour with the OSP or derail the investigation.”

He added that the investigation will continue despite the false allegation of raiding Mr. Ofori-Atta’s residence.

“You know us well; the OSP is not deterred by such occurrences. Investigations will continue as prescribed by law,” he added.
