Radio station charged GH₵35,000 for illegal connection

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has charged a radio station GH₵35,000 for illegally connecting electricity.

A visit by the Accra West ECG team revealed that Nsawam-based radio station Far Way FM, was using ‘electricity-free gadgets’.

“Through the exercise, we realised that the FM station has indeed bypassed the legal method. Most of the gadgets we identified were electricity-free gadgets, the transmitter, air-condition and other office types of equipment,” the acting General Manager said in a Joybusiness interview monitored by theghanareport.com

The radio station is noted for articulating issues affecting women.

The acting General Manager, Engineer Emmanuel Ankomah expressed shock and disappointment at persisting attempts in using the backdoor means to use power.

“It is sad to see institutions and individuals conniving to rig ECG of its desired revenue,” he said.

But he indicated the power supply company is determined to clamp down on these activities.

“The ECG is once again moving to arrest notorious individuals who are persistently engaged in power theft,” he stressed.

He noted that as at the end of 2019, ECG had recovered GH₵5.3 million from the illegal connections.

Mr Ankomah has, therefore, cautioned the general public to desist from such activities.

He announced that ECG would soon introduce a meter control monitor that would track all electrical appliances in the various localities.
