Public urged to desilt drains with onset of rainy season
Mr. Eric Asuman, acting Director General, Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), has urged the public to desilt drains and gutters, in order to minimise and also prevent flooding during this year’s major rainy season.
He said town and city authorities, should also ensure that water ways are not blocked by structures, because such blockages create artificial flooding which could otherwise have been prevented.
Mr. Asuman, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at this year’s seasonal weather forecast presentation in Accra, urged the media to continue collaborating with GMet, to disseminate weather warnings to the public on time.
He also advised the public to take weather warnings seriously, in order not to fall victim to some of the dangers of heavy downpours. such as the possibility of getting carried away by flood waters.
Mr. Asuman said the public should heed to weather warnings by GMet, even if even if some warnings might not come through exactly as they were issued.
He said while there was always the possibility of a weather warning not turning out as it was issued, such warnings still had to be taken seriously.
Mr. Asuman said by virtue of the fact that it was always possible for sudden changes to occur when it came to weather determinants, a weather warning could end up not coming through as described, but these warnings still had to be heeded.
The country is currently experiencing its first and major rainy season.
