Provide Amidu 24-hour protection – Akufo-Addo directs IGP

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Inspector General of Police to provide former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu immediately with 24-hour police protection.

“The attention of the Office of the President has been drawn to claims by Mr Martin Amidu, the former Special Prosecutor, of threats made against his life since his resignation from office. The President has, thus, directed the Inspector General of Police to provide Mr Amidu immediately with 24-hour police protection.

“The former Special Prosecutor is also encouraged to assist the police with details of persons who have made these threats against his life so that they can be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country,” the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, said in a post in Facebook.

The decision is in response to Mr Amidu’s claims that some known people had threatened him with burglary, arson, and armed robbery.

While declining to mention the names of the suspects in an interview with Citi FM, the former Special Prosecutor, who left office amid a garland of accusations against the President and some ministers in the current administration said he had taken steps to inform the minister of National Security, Mr Kan Dapaah.

“All these threats about murdering me, armed robbery, burning my house, I’m aware. I tried to call Kan Dapaah [National Security Minister] he didn’t pick it. But I got a former National Security advisor to contact him and tell him. I know the persons involved and I can name them.  I reserve it for now.

“I put my life on the Republic of Ghana and the President of the Republic if anything happens to me. The President will be responsible for anything that happens to me. The President has a constitutional duty to protect me. I don’t need any security in my house or to follow me, and anybody who makes an attempt will have himself to blame.”

Mr Amidu had been responding to a number of claims by the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong, who claimed among other things that the former Special Prosecutor had a medical history he has hiding from Ghanaians.
