Prospects for GH to host Grammys Africa —GUBA President

GHANA could end up as hub for Grammy Africa, a new initiative the Grammy Academy and other partners are looking to launch for the African continent.

Potentially, Ghana has the opportunities, and interested parties are optimistic that as discussions and interests grow, the country will emerge as the hotspot and most popular choice to host the headquarters for Grammy Africa.

President and Founder of the Grow Unite, Build, Africa (GUBA) Enterprise, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, made this known in an interview with Graphic Showbiz recently and emphasised that prospects for the country were favourable.

“Our conversations and interest on hosting the Grammys in Africa seems to have a head start between Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and CEO of Grammys, Harvey Mason.”

This follows an earlier meeting of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr. Harvey Mason and Lady Dentaa Amoateng.

The purpose of the gathering was to bring together key players in the country to solicit their support and debate innovative ideas for promoting the creative industry in Africa.

“We are looking at the academy exploring Grammys Africa because the continent is big and there are lots options to explore. Just like what they have for the Grammys Latin, Grammys Africa when instituted would cater to the African continent distinctively.

“Conversations are in the early stages but Ghana has the prospects and we are hopeful that as they bring finality to this initiative, Ghana would be chosen as the headquarters for Grammys Africa.”

She emphasised that it has become imperative for the Grammy Awards to start paying much more attention to Ghanaian artistes who have lived up to expectations in recent years as the light shines on several Ghanaian artistes.

“What we are looking at now is getting stakeholders from other parts of Africa to engage and it is very possible to have the headquarters here in Ghana. There are prospects for Ghana, she said.

She said industry players in the country including the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) have pledged their support to improve the creative industry. The office of the Vice President pledged support.

Dr Bawumia pledged utmost commitment for the creative industry adding that all hands must be on deck to make it work.

Harvey Mason was in Ghana to assess and meet industry players such as artistes, producers and promoters.

Part of his visit was also to connect diasporans to Africa and look out for strategies on giving Ghanaian musicians a spotlight on the Grammys.
