Probe post-electoral violence if approved – Minority charges A-G designate
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has charged the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Designate, Dr.1 Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to probe all post-election violence cases when he is officially approved by the Appointments Committee.
This concern was raised by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on Monday, January 13, 2025, during his opening remarks before the vetting of ministerial nominees.
Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised the need for decisive action in response violence following the December 7, 2024, general elections, across the country.
He added that persons found guilty of instigating or participating in such acts must face justice to safeguard the integrity and stability of Ghana’s democracy.
“The disturbing videos circulating show the severe threats these actions pose to our democracy. If confirmed, the Attorney General nominee must ensure thorough investigations and accountability for these violations, as no crime committed in pursuit of political power should go unpunished,” he stated.
The Minority Leader also called for a fair and impartial judicial process under his tenure if approved.
“If confirmed, to prioritise investigations into the disturbances and ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of their political affiliations,” he added.
