Prestea SHS students protest campus road use

Students of Prestea Senior High School in the Western Region walked out of their classrooms to protest the constant flow of community vehicles through their campus.

They say the situation has become unsafe and has disrupted learning for far too long.

According to the students, cars and motorbikes often speed through the school compound, a practice they claim has caused several knockdowns and injuries over the years.

They say many of the drivers involved flee immediately after the incidents, leaving school authorities to cater for the medical bills of the injured students.

For the young learners who already have to balance academic pressure, the fear of being hit on their own campus adds a heavy emotional burden.

The students explained that the issue began about five years ago when the community appealed for temporary access to the school road.

The request was made when repairs were being carried out on the community’s main access route. The students say they were told the arrangement would last only three months, yet residents have continued to rely on the campus road to this day.

Videos from the scene show students dragging desks to block the road while others tied red bands on their heads and arms to show their frustration. Police officers later arrived to maintain calm as the protest grew.

“We were told the community would use the road for only three months while their bridge was being fixed, but it has been five years”,

“Our friends have been injured, and learning has become difficult. We want the community to understand that we cannot keep living like this”, the Boys Prefect Abdul Basit said.
