President Akufo Addo questions GFA over Black Stars poor performance at major tournaments
President Akufo Addo has questioned the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over Black Stars’ consistent failure at major tournaments.
He raised this concern following a visit by the leadership of the Ghana FA at the Jubilee House on Wednesday.
Ghana exited at the group phase of the last AFCON in Cameroon and also exited at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In his address, President Akufo Addo said the country has talent in abundance but does not understand why the consistent failure at tournaments.
“We have some very good talents scattered across the globe, so I don’t understand why we shouldn’t perform in tournaments,” he said.
The meeting which took place was centred on the development of football and sports in the country.
Meanwhile, Ghana, who are chasing to lift their fifth continental title will compete in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast next year.
The Black Stars have been housed in Group B for the tournament and will face Cape Verde, Egypt and Mozambique.
Ghana will first come up against Cape Verde at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on January 14, 2024, then face Egypt at the same venue four days later and then Mozambique at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium on January 22, 2024.
The 34th edition of the AFCON has been scheduled to kick off from January 13 to February 11.
