President Akufo-Addo leaves fate of Black Stars coach in GFA hands
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he is not ready to interfere in the affairs of Ghana Football Association concerning the contractual issues of Black Stars head coach Kwesi Appiah.
With FIFA already breathing heavily on political leaders interfering in football, the President stood clear off the Ghana Football Association turf.
Controversial sports presenter, Patrick Osei Agyemang, alias Countryman Songo, asked the President at a media encounter on Monday about his thoughts on the fate of Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah.
Probably sensing the inherent danger in the question, the President, an experienced lawyer, said matters of the senior national team trainer should be left for the constitutional mandated body GFA
“If I say yes, it’s like I am putting pressure on the GFA to renew his contract and if I say no, then I know for sure they will not be able to do it.”
“So, let me keep away from that from answering that question altogether,” he said.
Kwesi Appiah was handed a six-month contract extension prior to the AFCON 2019 after his initial two-year deal expired. His contract will end this month.
Last month, he led the Black Stars in the AFCON 2021 qualifier doubleheader against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.
The team won both matches and are on top of Group C in the qualifiers with six points.
