The first Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu has called on the youth to take up bigger roles in leadership stressing the need for them to be ready for a much bigger task in future.

According to him, it is critical for youth representatives and all stakeholders to come together to put out workable rules of engagement that would guide the way forward in empowering the youth for future leadership roles in the nation’s political dispensation.

Speaking at a National Youth Authority (NYA) conference in Koforidua, Mr. Osei-Owusu explained that due to the rather youthful age demographics of Ghana, it would be prudent for specific interventions to be put in place to prepare the youth to take over the management of the country’s affairs.

He stated “It was imperative to guide the youth, who are regarded as the working force and the future of the country, there is the need for them to develop and show keen interest in governance issues.”

Mr. Osei-Owusu added that Parliament over the years had facilitated the establishment of youth parliaments in various tertiary institutions to build up their interests from the secondary and tertiary levels.

“The level of successes chalked up, quality of work and the continued sustenance of democracy in Ghana depended on how “we are able to train, educate and inculcate the principles and tenets of parliamentary democracy for the youth,” he reiterated.
