Residents across Greater Kumasi are grappling with persistent water shortages as the Ghana Water Company Limited attributes the situation to unstable electricity supply in the Ashanti Region.
According to the company, frequent outages and voltage fluctuations have disrupted operations at key production facilities, worsening an already fragile supply system.
The affected installations include the Barekese and Owabi Water Treatment Plants and the Achiase Booster Station, which have experienced repeated power interruptions from the Electricity Company of Ghana in recent weeks.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Chief Manager for the Ashanti Production Region, Dr. Hanson Mensah Akutteh, said the company urgently needs a restored dedicated power line to stabilise production.
“Now the frequent outages and voltage fluctuations are not allowing us to mitigate these deficits we have. Going forward, what we want to see is that our treatment plants, which used to have a dedicated line, should have that restored,” he said.
The impact has been deeply felt in communities such as Maxima, Atonsu Agogo, Bantama, Abrepo, Krofrom, Dichemso and Asokwa, where households have gone more than two weeks without reliable access to pipe-borne water.
Many residents now depend on boreholes and underground sources, while others walk long distances or pay higher prices to private water vendors to meet their daily needs.
Meanwhile, the management of GWCL has apologised for the inconvenience and says it is engaging ECG to improve power supply to its installations to restore steady water flow to the metropolis.
