Pope Leo sends condolences to Ghana after tragic helicopter crash

Pope Leo XIV has expressed his deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to Ghana following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including government officials and military personnel, on August 6, 2025.

In a message conveyed through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, the Pope reached out to Bishop Matthew K. Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

The Holy Father offered prayers for the souls of the departed and support for the grieving families and the entire nation during this time of mourning.

“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV sends his condolences upon the deaths of the ministers, government officials, and all who perished in the military helicopter crash,” the message read. “Entrusting the souls of the deceased to the mercy of Almighty God, and with prayers for those who mourn their loss, especially their families, the Holy Father assures the nation of his spiritual closeness at this difficult time.”

The message was made public by the Holy See Press Office on August 7.

The helicopter crash occurred in Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region while the officials were en route to a national event. Among those who lost their lives were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.

Others included Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC National Vice Chairman Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In response, the government has declared three days of national mourning. A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Presidency, and a vigil is planned for Saturday, August 9, to honour the memory of the victims.
