Police retrieve Hawa Koomson’s gun

The Central Regional Police Command has retrieved the gun used by Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, in a shoot-out at a voter registration centre at Kasoa in the Central Region.

“Regional Police CID Cape coast invited Hawa Koomson. She was taken through her statement. Police retrieved the weapon and ammunition together with a license covering the weapon.

“Her case docket has been handed over to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department in Accra,” the police said in a statement.

This was after the Awutu Senya East MP honoured an invitation by the police to help in investigations in respect of her admission that she fired a warning shot at the Steps to Christ voter registration centre.

The Special Development Initiatives Minister honoured the police invitation on Friday, in the company of her lawyers.

Ms Koomson came under fire for claiming that she fired a warning shot at Steps to Christ voter registration during a confrontation between members of the National Democratic Congress led by her opponent, Phyllis Naa Koryoo, and the New Patriotic Party.

The minister’s conduct has been widely condemned, with the National Peace Council and some security experts calling for her head, while the biggest opposition party, NDC, leads the crusade for her resignation and prosecution.

Some civil society organizations and individuals have also called on President Akufo-Addo for her outright dismissal.

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) subsequently filed a criminal complaint against the Awutu Senya East MP.

ASEPA made the complaint in a petition to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service demanding the arrest of the MP.

But Ms Koomson has explained that she only fired the gunshots in self-defence because she felt threatened by some thugs allegedly with the NDC parliamentary candidate.

Four persons were arrested in connection with the incident on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has also justified Ms Koomson’s action, insisting it was in self-defence.
