Police have recovered 17 spent shells from an AK 47 assault rifle gun used in the Jamestown robbery on Monday, June 14.
Eight robbers on four motorcycles shot and killed a cop and a civilian, with another victim sustaining serious injuries.
The robbers attacked a bullion van that belongs to MON-TRAN, a company that provides cash in transit services for many financial institutions in Ghana.
A cop from the National SWAT Headquarters, who was escorting the pickup van with registration No. GT 8592-W was shot in the head, killing him instantly.
The deceased officer has been identified as No.58449 G/Constable Emmanuel Osei.
He was found in a pool of blood at the van’s front seat after the bullet went through the vehicle’s windscreen.
A lady identified as Joyce Amankwah, aged about 35 years, who was sitting in her kiosk, was hit by a stray bullet and killed instantly as the robbers fired indiscriminately.
One Eric Okyere, a bystander, was also hit in the hand and was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Grace Essel, one of the officials, managed to escape from the car.
Police were able to locate her as she sought refuge in the community.
However, the assailants bolted with the cop’s rifle and an undisclosed amount of money taken from the van.
The incident has attracted a wave of discussion about security in the country, with the recent incident being the second daylight robbery in less than a week.
Consequently, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong Boanuh, has directed swift investigations into the latest incident.
He has instructed the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department to take over the investigations.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Effia Tenge, has called on the public to volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the culprit.
Daylight robbery in Accra
The recent attack comes barely a week after another heist occurred at Pigfarm in Accra on June 9.
Two robbers on a motorbike chased a 34-year-old victim who had in his possession a backpack.
After they got to the victim, they shot him multiple times and sped off after snatching the bag.
The wounded man had to be rushed to the 37 Military Hospital to save his life after bleeding profusely.
The recent robbery attacks have raised concerns over the bold robbery attacks undertaken in broad daylight.
Infact this is serious the Ghana police service must wake up. If not this will tarnish the image of the present government.
