A 92-year-old man was almost lynched by some residents of Kalabule in the Ga South Municipality after they mistook him for a wizard.
The man, who has since been identified as John Quaye, was discovered in a bush along the Densu River in the community by some residents a day after he went missing from home.
The residents, who did not know his identity assumed he was a wizard who fell from a nocturnal ‘flight’ into the bush due to his fragile and unkempt appearance.
According to reports, his incoherent answers to their questions and overall failure to communicate properly further heightened the residents’ suspicion.
However, an attempt to lynch him was thwarted by the timely intervention of the Ghana Police.
According to his family, the 92-year-old is a retired cocoa farmer who is suffering from dementia associated with old age.

The family said he disappeared from home and they were searching for him until the police rescued him.
They vehemently denied any claims that he was a wizard who fell from the sky into the bush.
This comes in the wake of a 55-year-old woman, Joyce Boateng, allegedly stabbing her 76-year-old mother, Afia Sarpomaah, to death in Abuakwa Asonomaso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect claimed a pastor told her that her mother was a witch responsible for her problems.
This incident happened on Sunday, June 16, 2024.
The area’s assembly member said, “After stabbing her mother, the suspect attempted to commit suicide by drinking weedicide but was apprehended and sent to the hospital for treatment”.
