Police ‘Red Maria’ arrest 15 in anti-drug operation in Tamale, Savelugu

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 15 individuals suspected of drug trafficking during coordinated operations in Tamale and Savelugu, as part of a broader initiative to combat narcotics in the area.

The raids were executed by the Northern Regional Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as “Red Maria,” during the night of March 17 and the early hours of March 18.

According to police reports, the operation was spearheaded by Superintendent John Danso and ASP Rashid Jeremiah, involving a total of 35 personnel.

As detailed in a police situational report, the team initially conducted an operation at Choggu in Tamale, resulting in the arrest of nine suspects found with suspected narcotic substances.

Subsequently, officers proceeded to Savelugu around 5 a.m., where they apprehended six more suspects.

All 15 individuals are presently in custody and are cooperating with the ongoing investigations, as stated by the police.

This operation is part of the police’s continuous efforts to suppress drug trafficking and associated activities in the Northern Region.
