If you are a speed monster who drives beyond speed limit in Accra, cut down your speed because the police have got some sophisticated speed guns to flag you down.

It is a speed gun that can capture multiple speeding vehicle at the same time.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Bloomberg Philanthropies for Global Road Safety (AMA – BIGRS) donated the speed guns to the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The device is a speed detection gun that can capture at once multiple motorists that violate the speed limit, compared to the previous police speed gun which could only claim one offender at a time.

Speeding is regarded as one of the causes of road accidents with an average of six fatalities on the country’s roads.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of the Assembly’s Public Affairs Department of the assembly, said, the assembly presented laser cam 4-speed guns to the MTTD ahead of the Christmas festivities to clamp down on over-speeding.

“The Assembly has also launched a Road Safety Mass Media campaign. Per the campaign, in educating the people, we must still ensure that we enforce the law.
“ So these speed guns have been brought in as part of measures to enforce the various road safety laws on various offences on speeding” he noted.

He observed that often, MTTD personnel are unable to tender in strong evidence against drivers, who breach road safety laws, but the introduction of the speed guns will equip them to do so.

Touching briefly on sanitation ahead of the Christmas festivities, Ankrah said, the assembly in conjunction with the Ministry of Sanitation has provided dust bins at vantage points in the city for pedestrians.

“This is an effort and it is also prominent to note that as residents and visitors we must always keep the city clean” he noted
