Police probe fire outbreak that killed couple in Sunyani
The Bono Regional Police Command has officially initiated an investigation into the fire that resulted in the deaths of a couple in Asuakwa, a neighbourhood within the Sunyani East Municipality.
In a statement issued today, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Public Relations Officer for the Bono Regional Police Command, indicated that police received an emergency call on October 20 and promptly arrived at the location, where personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were already engaged in extinguishing the fire.
This tragic event took place around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, amidst a heavy rainstorm that affected various areas of Sunyani.
The deceased, identified as Nana Ameyaw Ampofo, aged 65, and Grace Adu Boafoawaa, aged 49, were discovered charred beyond recognition. A crime scene management team evaluated the area and confirmed that the structure and its contents had been entirely obliterated.
Two bodies were retrieved from the kitchen area, while a Toyota Highlander and a nearby pickup truck sustained partial damage.
“We are working closely with the Ghana National Fire Service to determine the cause of this tragic fire and will provide updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement said.
The statement further noted that the remains of the deceased have been transported to the Sunyani Teaching Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Meanwhile, the Bono Regional Police Command reassured the public that officials are dedicated to conducting a comprehensive investigation and will keep the community updated on any new information.
