Police in Walewale have launched a joint investigation with their colleagues in Bolgatanga after a late-night shooting claimed the life of an officer at the Karimenga Police Checkpoint in the Upper East Region.

The incident, which occurred around 11:30 pm on Sunday, December 28, has left residents along the Karimenga to Pwulugu stretch shaken and searching for answers.

General Constable Oppong Damoah Seth was shot dead during the attack, while two other officers sustained gunshot wounds to their legs.

According to police accounts, the night began with a distress call after unknown gunmen ambushed a bus in the area.

Officers from the Karimenga checkpoint quickly responded and managed to disrupt the initial attack, forcing the assailants to retreat into the surrounding bush. For a moment, it appeared the danger had passed.

That calm, however, was short-lived. The attackers reportedly regrouped and returned, this time directing their fire at the police checkpoint itself.

His colleagues, despite returning fire, were also hit and injured.

The two wounded officers were rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical care.

Their condition has not been officially disclosed, but police say they are responding to treatment.
