Police pledge quick action on Ablekuma North rerun violence
The Accra Regional Police Command has pledged to thoroughly investigate all acts of violence and assault that occurred during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025, and to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the Police acknowledged that there were isolated incidents of violence at some polling stations.
These incidents, while limited, caused temporary disruptions to the voting process.
The Command emphasized that it is taking the matter seriously and has already begun investigations to identify and prosecute the individuals involved.
The Police assured the public of their continued commitment to maintaining law and order and upholding the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
“Preliminary reports indicate that these incidents caused temporary disruptions to the otherwise peaceful conduct of the election in some polling stations. Police officers intervened promptly to restore calm and ensure voting continued without further interruptions,” the statement read.
The Police further noted that efforts are underway to identify all perpetrators of violence, intimidation, or any breach of the peace that occurred during the rerun.
Those found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The Regional Command is taking steps to identify perpetrators, and anyone found to have engaged in acts of violence, intimidation, or breach of the peace will be arrested and taken through the due process of law,” the statement added.
The Command also called on members of the public to assist with ongoing investigations by sharing relevant information. Citizens with information on individuals involved in the disturbances are encouraged to contact the Police via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
The Ablekuma North election rerun was conducted in 19 polling stations due to earlier disputes over irregularities.
The exercise, though largely peaceful, was marred by pockets of violence, including reported assaults on candidates and election observers.
The Police say they remain committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that future electoral processes are conducted in a safe and peaceful environment.
