Kumasi Accident: Police on manhunt for truck driver

The police are on a manhunt for the truck driver who parked his vehicle along the shoulders of the road, leading to the death of a police officer on Wednesday afternoon at Gao junction near Kentinkrono on the Kumasi-Ejisu stretch in the Ashanti Region.

The unidentified officer, chasing an Okada rider with his motorcycle for flouting traffic regulations, reportedly collided with a faulty stationary truck with registration number GM 445-13.

The gory scene, which has been widely shared online, saw the officer lying unresponsive with a deep cut around his head and other body parts.

According to an eyewitness, “Both of them were on top speed. The officer was pursuing the civilian biker. But suddenly we heard a loud sound a moment later, only for us to discover that he [the officer] had crashed into the stationary truck. He bled profusely as he suffered some deep cuts. The civilian motorist was also struck down in the process. He had some deep cuts around his body parts and fractures.”

“This truck has been on the shoulder of this stretch for days and there is no sense of urgency to tow it to a safe place. Many of them are dotted on our roads and they have become death traps. This is a disaster in waiting and authorities must take steps to address this,” another eyewitness lamented.

The civilian motorist, who was in critical condition, was rushed to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital for medical attention but was also pronounced dead on arrival.

Emergency services, including the police MTTD, swiftly responded to the scene following a distress call. The accident caused heavy traffic on that stretch as inhabitants expressed shock and sorrow over the incident.

The truck was still on the shoulder of the road at the time of filing this report.

There is a serious manhunt for the driver, who is currently on the run.
