A uniformed police officer captured in a viral video has been interdicted for allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be a narcotic drug.

Sergeant Isaac Nii Sowah, with service number 42681, is said to be stationed at the Accra Regional Police Command.

A statement confirming his interdiction was posted on the police official social media account on Friday, 10 June 2022.

The police said investigations are ongoing, and the Sergeant will be taken through the necessary disciplinary and legal action.

In addition, he would be given the necessary psycho-social support in line with the new strategic police welfare policy.

This is not the first time a policeman has come into the limelight for exhibiting behaviours unsuggestive of a trained officer.

On 12 January 2022, a police officer captured in a viral video in a possibly drunken state was interdicted and referred to a psychologist.

The uniformed cop, who was seen sitting in front of a shop, appeared wobbly in his steps when he attempted to walk.

A citizen who captured the video is heard running commentary, accusing the officer of denting the image of the service.

In February 2022, six police officers involved in the shooting incident at Lamashegu in Tamale were interdicted after preliminary investigations.

The six cops, attached to the Tamale District Patrol team, are Samson Kweku Darfour, Corporal Prosper Mormesimu (both Corporals), Harrison Twum Danso, Mathew Sah, Nuhu Muntari, and Doris Serwaa Bonsu (all four are Constables).

One of the cops allegedly shot a resident who had gone to seek refuge at the Palace of the Lamashegu Chief, leading to bloody riots.

Following the incident, one person was confirmed dead, while seven others sustained  various degrees of injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the cops who were on patrol duty came across a young man who was driving an unregistered private vehicle.

The police stopped him but he drove off at top speed towards the palace. The police then fired in the car’s direction, hitting one person in the process.

Again, on 5 April 2022, a police officer was interdicted for brandishing a gun in a viral video.

The video showed the officer in a heated confrontation with another man on the road.

The officer hit the civilian twice during the altercation while brandishing his weapon.

The cop is alleged to have indicated that he pulled out his pistol after he was attacked with a cutlass.

On 14 May 2022, four policemen were interdicted after a suspect died in police cells at Ashaiman, in the Tema Police Regional Command.

The reason for arresting the suspect and placing him in police cells was reportedly not recorded in the station diary.

Besides, other inmates who reportedly noticed the suspect needed medical attention at night and drew the attention of the policeman on duty to it were ignored until the suspect reportedly died the following day, Wednesday, 4 May 2022.

In September 2021, four cops attached to the Northern Regional Command were interdicted over the alleged assault of residents for engaging in illegal electricity connections in some Tamale communities.

The officers were assigned to assist the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to arrest people engaging in illegal electricity connections.

But in a video circulating on social media, the officers were seen whipping some residents and breaking into rooms in areas including Zujung, Lamashegu and Nakpan Zou.
