The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has effectively dismantled a perilous armed robbery syndicate operating along the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway, following intelligence-driven operations carried out on the 10th and 11th of March 2026.
These operations involved a gunfire exchange, leading to the death of two suspects, the confiscation of firearms, and several arrests. The initiative also unveiled a broader illegal arms supply network functioning in the Asawase region of the Ashanti Region.
On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Command received reliable intelligence indicating that armed individuals had assembled in a bush along the Obuasi-Dunkwa highway in anticipation of a robbery. Police units were promptly dispatched to the location.
Upon their arrival, officers observed four armed suspects. The gang opened fire and attempted to escape. The police returned fire, resulting in the fatal wounding of two suspects, while the other two reportedly managed to flee.
Items recovered from the scene were: One (1) AK-47 assault rifle (serial number 68104599) with 28 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, one (1) pump-action gun with five rounds of BB cartridges, and eight (8) additional rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.

The deceased suspects were identified as David Aheto, 42, from Sogakope and residing in Asin Fosu, and Illiasu Bawa, 32, from Banda Nkwanta in the Savannah Region.

Investigations have connected the suspects to numerous robberies in Obuasi, Dunkwa, Wasa Akropong, and Asin Fosu. Intelligence has also pointed to Samuel Agyei, known as Africa, and other individuals currently on remand at Wasa Akropong, as members of the gang.
Alhaji Abdalah from Asawase, Kumasi, is accused of having sold the recovered AK-47 to the gang for GH₵45,000 and also provided a G3 rifle and a pistol to Samuel Agyei.
A subsequent operation on March 11, 2026, resulted in the arrest of Aminu Iddrisu, known as 0244, who led police to an AK-47 and a Bruni pistol concealed in a sheep pen at Moshie Zongo, Kumasi.
Another suspect, Daniel Debrah, 24, was also apprehended, with a search revealing a red Toyota Corolla believed to be the proceeds of the gang’s robberies.
Suspects Abdalah Alhassan, Jemini Usman alias Babamu, Aminu Iddrisu alias 0244, and Daniel Debrah remain in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
The police are on a manhunt for Mallam Aminu and other gang members involved in the act.
