A Form Two student of Bantama Seventh-day Adventist Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi has been arrested after allegedly shooting a female classmate.
According to a report by the headmistress of the school, Grace Kafui Ayi, to the head of Adventist Schools, the incident happened on April 4, 2025, during the school’s break time.
She recounted that the culprit pulled out the gun from his bag and threatened to shoot his colleague student in the class.
“Per investigation from the other students in his class, one male student indicated that the culprit showed him the gun. He pointed the gun at him. The friend, out of fear hit the gun to the other direction and it triggered and hit the face of another student (name withheld) and she started bleeding profusely,” she said in her report.
The headmistress continued that the victim was taken to the Kwadaso SDA hospital and then referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for treatment.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun investigating the incident.
A statement by the police said preliminary findings indicate that the 16-year-old second-year student, whose identity is being withheld, brought a locally manufactured pistol loaded with one BB ammunition to the school.
It added that the juvenile suspect has been taken into police custody, and the empty cartridge has been recovered as evidence.
During questioning, the suspect revealed that the firearm was taken from his father’s bedroom without his father’s consent.
The police said they are now working to locate and arrest the father to assist in the investigation.
They further reassured the public of their commitment to thoroughly investigating the matter.
