Police holds memorial service for officers killed in Kyekyewere accident

The Ghana Police Service has held a one-week memorial service for its three officers who were killed in a fatal accident at Kyekyewere along the Accra-Kumasi Highway on March 27, 2024.

The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) in Accra on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

The deceased are Chief Inspector Michael Adzaho, PW Inspector Theresa Zampiah, and General Corporal Emmanuel Asamoah.

The police officers were in a convoy heading towards Kwahu to ensure peace and security ahead of the Kwahu Easter celebrations.

Unfortunately, when the white Formed Police Unit (FPU) van reached Kyekyewere, one of its tyres burst, causing the vehicle to somersault and land in a ditch.

The force of the accident resulted in the doors of the vehicle coming off, leading to the ejection of the three officers.

They were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital, where the three officers were confirmed dead.

General Corporal Samuel Jude Koufie, another officer travelling with them, sustained injuries and received medical treatment at the hospital.

During the ceremony, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, extended condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the service, government, and people of Ghana.

He said the police service was devastated by the death and was yet to recover from the shock, but they prayed to God for strength in these difficult times.

Acknowledging that this was not the end expected, IGP Dampare expressed gratitude to the bereaved family for allowing their relatives to serve the nation.

He pledged the support of the service to give the deceased a befitting burial.

The IGP also charged personnel to remain steadfast and discharge their duty as expected and not be dampened by the unfortunate deaths of their colleagues.

However, the one-week observance for Inspector Theresa Zampiaw was held by her family and loved ones on April 6, 2024, at Marina Park, Ashaley Botwe, in Accra, from 6 am to 6 pm.
