Police Constable who shot man over fare remanded

Police officer, Constable Smith Gyeke, has been remanded in police custody for two weeks after allegedly shooting and killing 25-year-old man Stanley Ahadzi, following a disagreement over transport fare.

Constable Gyeke, who was put before the Adabraka District Court on Wednesday, August 21, faces a provisional charge of murder.

His plea was not taken, but the charge and brief facts were read to him in open court.

“The accused, Smith Gyeke, is a Police Officer attached to the International Relations Directorate of the Ghana Police Service. He was off-duty but engaging in ride-hailing operations when the incident occurred,” said Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, the Police Prosecutor.

According to the facts of the case, Constable Gyeke shot Ahadzi without provocation after a dispute over fare.

The incident occurred on August 18, 2024, at about 4:00 am, at the frontage of Koans Estate at Satellite.

“The Regional Crime Scene Team processed the scene, and the body of Stanley Ahadzi has been taken to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation, awaiting autopsy,” said Chief Inspector Apewah.

Constable Gyeke, who appeared without a lawyer, is expected in court again on September 9, 2024.

The Magistrate, Her Worship Ama Adomako Kwakye, has remanded him in police custody to allow for further investigations.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have visited the family of the deceased to commiserate with them.

A police clinical psychologist and other officers have been assigned to the family to support them through their moments of difficulty.
