10 people have sustained injuries at Loagri in the Yagaba/Kubori Constituency in the North East Region as police clashed with residents over an alleged thief.
The incident was reportedly triggered by rising motorbike thefts during market days.
The latest theft incident happened on Wednesday, December 27 when one of the notorious suspects, attempted to steal another motorbike.
The suspect, who was already on the wanted list was, however, caught in the act.
He sought refuge in a nearby house when onlookers gave him a hot chase through the market.
The house owner locked the door to protect the suspect. A move that angered the residents who demanded access to the house.
Police, patrolling the market due to its frequent theft problems, arrived on the scene to secure the stolen motorbike.
However, they faced resistance from the angry crowd who feared the suspect would escape punishment.
According to eyewitnesses, the irate Loagri residents confronted the police over their delay in arresting the suspect, further escalating the situation.
The police then fired warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
In response, some residents pelted the police with stones, prompting them to fire in their direction.
This resulted in ten people sustaining injuries.
They were rushed to the nearby hospital and are currently receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, the suspect is in police custody while an investigation is ongoing.
