Police arrest two with 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two men for the unlawful possession of a large quantity of ammunition following an operation at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, his mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, after police stopped a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18.

The bus was travelling from Accra to Walewale, with Paga as its final destination.

During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered two hidden containers containing a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

Further checks also led to the recovery of a bag concealed beneath the driver’s seat, which contained two bulletproof plates, a black helmet and a pair of long boots.

Both suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.

The bus and all seized items have been impounded as police continue to probe the source and intended destination of the ammunition.
