Police arrest suspect in Kasoa Zongo election day shooting

Police have arrested a thirty-five-year-old man in connection with a shooting incident that disrupted voting during the 2024 General Elections at Kasoa Zongo.

The suspect, identified as Mujaheed Suraj, is accused of opening fire in a public area where residents had gathered to participate in the democratic process.

According to preliminary police accounts, the suspect allegedly fired shots without regard for the safety of bystanders.

Two people sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.

A parked pickup vehicle was also damaged in the incident, adding to the fear and confusion that swept through the community at the time.

Residents say the shooting caused panic among voters, with some fleeing the area while others sought shelter.

Many described the moment as frightening, especially for families who had come out early to cast their ballots peacefully.

Community leaders later called for calm and cooperation with security agencies as investigations began.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to firing the weapon and acknowledged that the firearm belonged to him. Police say the weapon is a pump-action gun.

However, he was unable to produce any valid documentation to justify the lawful possession of the firearm.

The weapon has since been retrieved and secured as part of ongoing investigations.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court as the investigation continues.
