Police arrest suspect after shooting of Dompoase Chief

One person has been arrested after a shooting incident that injured the chief of Adanse Dompoase, Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu II, during a funeral in Obuasi.

A statement from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council said the incident happened on Saturday, 29 November 2025, when a musketeer accidentally fired a gun during the ceremony.

The Dompoasehene of the Adansi Traditional Area was hit by a stray bullet and later taken to the hospital.

“The Police intervened promptly and arrested the suspect, 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with investigations,” Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene stated.

The chief was injured while exchanging greetings with the Omanhene of Asebu Kwamankese and other traditional leaders at the funeral of the late mother of the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin.

He has since received medical care and has been discharged.

Dr. Amoakohene said the incident highlights the need for the temporary nationwide ban on firearm use at funerals and traditional events.

“The directive remains a vital public safety measure designed to protect lives, prevent injuries and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified atmosphere,” he stated.

“Adherence to this directive is essential for maintaining order and safeguarding the well-being of all attendees.”

The Council urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as it works to preserve peace, enhance safety and uphold the rule of law across the region.
