Police arrest farmer for amputating suspected thief’s hand

A 30-year-old farmer has been arrested following a shocking incident at Atwima Trabuom in the Ashanti region, where a suspected thief had his hand severed during an alleged confrontation on a farm.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, March 21, 2026, around 2:00 a.m., when a 19-year-old man allegedly went to a ginger farm in the community with the intention of stealing produce.

According to the Ghana Police Service, their sources indicate that the farmer, whose name has not been officially disclosed, is said to have caught the young man in the act.

Statements from the community leaders suggest that, during the confrontation, the farmer allegedly used his sharp machete to cut off the suspect’s right hand.

The injured teenager reportedly managed to leave the scene and returned home later that morning with the severe injury.

The Unit Committee Chairman for the area, Kwadwo Amankwa, confirmed that he had seen the victim days before the incident in good condition, but was shocked to encounter him later with his hand severed.

He stated that the victim identified the farmer as the person responsible for the act.

Further accounts indicate that the teenager had allegedly been frequenting several ginger farms in the area before this incident, raising suspicions among the farmers in the area about repeated theft cases in the community.

Following the development, the matter was reported to the police, leading to the swift arrest of the farmer by officers from the Toase Police Command.

He is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
