Police arrest driver who allegedly caused train accident on Tema-Mpakadan rail line
The driver of the abandoned truck that caused the accident on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line on Thursday, April 18, 2024, has been arrested by the police.
In a statement, the police said the suspect driver left the truck with registration number GS 9018 – 20 unattended on the railway line, resulting in a collision with the new Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train recently procured from Poland.
The identity of the suspect is yet to be revealed by the police. However, the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
According to the Ministry of Railways Development, the train was on a test run when it crashed into a truck parked in a curve at approximately 12:10 p.m. on April 18, 2024.
“Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the vehicle,” the ministry said in a statement.
It added that there were no fatalities from the accident, apart from damage to the driver’s cabin and the destruction of the truck.
